Age

School year (the year the test is sat)

Years 3–4 sit AMC Middle Primary; Years 5–6 sit Upper Primary. The Melbourne Grammar test is sat in Year 4 (Year 3 may start early). ICAS is open to Years 4–6. NAPLAN is open to Years 3–7. Years 7–8 sit AMC Junior — that paper is being built, so those years join the list today.

Exam

Sat online in March. A child trains on the paper they sit next: Year 3 on the Year 3 paper, Years 4-5 on Year 5, Years 6-7 on Year 7. Numeracy, reading and conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) as papers, and a writing piece each week marked on the official ten-strand rubric.

How your child takes a hard question

Three quick ones, answered by you. They set how much of each practice paper is at the hardest level and what that level is called; from the fourth week the papers adjust to what your child actually does. Nothing here changes a test.
