School year (the year the test is sat)

Years 3–4 sit AMC Middle Primary; Years 5–6 sit Upper Primary. The Melbourne Grammar test is sat in Year 4 (Year 3 may start early). ICAS is open to Years 4–6. NAPLAN is open to Years 3–7. Years 7–8 sit AMC Junior — that paper is being built, so those years join the list today.

Exam

ICAS is sat at school in August; entry is through the school. Year 4 sits Paper B, Year 5 Paper C and Year 6 Paper D. Mathematics: forty questions in one hour, no calculator, in the five categories on the official answer keys. English: reading passages with questions on comprehension, the writer's craft, syntax and vocabulary.

How your child takes a hard question

Three quick ones, answered by you. They set how much of each practice paper is at the hardest level and what that level is called; from the fourth week the papers adjust to what your child actually does. Nothing here changes a test.
